Roof Leaks

Published by Andrew Schmidt

Roof leaks can cause damage to the structure of your home and be hazardous for its occupants health. By the time you notice the effects serious damage has likely already been done.

Follow these signals so you can find and fix leaks as soon as possible:

  • Water stains
  • Attic temperatures
  • Mold

If you find any of the above roof leak indicators, you must call your roofing contractor immediately. If the issues aren’t addressed promptly, the following damage could occur:

Decreased Energy Efficiency

When your roof is leaking, your home becomes more humid and damp. When that happens, your heating system has to work harder to warm up your home, and heating bills will increase. Leaks will also make insulation wet, lessening the energy-efficiency even more.

Mold

The growth of mold can eat away at the structure of your home and make the people inside sick. Dark and damp areas are the ideal environment for mold to grow and spread. Most types of molds can cause asthma attacks, allergic reactions and other health problems, and can attack wood, carpets and some clothing.

Breached Insulation

When insulation is breached, it is no longer effective at preventing cold air from entering the home and keeping your living space warm and comfortable.

Structural Deterioration

Dampness caused by roof leaks can deteriorate steel, wood and other materials in the house. Metal will rust, wood will rot, paint will peel and the ceiling will crack. All of this can be extremely expensive and time-consuming to repair.

If you see a sign of a leak, don’t wait! Call your roofer ASAP.
