System Components

Ice and water shield is a key component of any roofing system. Not only does it protect against leakage from ice damming, but it also offers much needed protection in the most vulnerable areas of your roof. This product will enhance any roofing system and will give you peace and security knowing that your roof can handle even the worst Chicago winters.

After ice and water shield, felt paper is installed. We prefer a high quality, fiberglass-reinforced felt, like Shingle-Mate from GAF (shown at left). Shingle-Mate is superior to regular 15# felt paper because it lays flatter, lasts longer, and is easier to work with.

Shingles are the next component of your roofing system. When choosing a shingle, it’s important to take into account the style, size, and location of your home; and of course, your personal preferences. We have installed all types of asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, and cedar shingles.
Most people don’t realize that 90% of homes have inadequate attic ventilation—or that inadequate ventilation can lead to a host of other problems, like peeling interior paint, stains on ceilings, or even mold and mildew, not to mention excessive energy costs. A good ventilation system is balanced, with intake (usually under the eaves) and exhaust (usually on or near peak of roof) vents working together to get stale air out and fresh air in. Ridge vents, like Certainteed’s ShingleVent II (shown at left), are an effective
ventilation tool and look great, too. |
